Applications that require ethical approval through Integrated Research Application System (IRAS) e.g., research involving NHS patients or service users, or the use of information related to these individuals, social care research funded by the Department of Health, research involving individuals over the age of 16 who lack mental capacity to give informed consent (as per the UK Mental Capacity Act 2005), research involving participants from the UK Armed Forces or  https://www.myresearchproject.org.uk/

You will need to complete a research ethics application through Integrated Research Application System (IRAS) if your research requires permission/approval from any of the following bodies:

  • Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee (ARSAC)
  • Confidentiality Advisory Group (CAG)
  • Gene Therapy Advisory Committee (GTAC)
  • Health Research Authority (HRA) for projects seeking HRA Approval
  • Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
  • NHS / HSC R&D offices
  • NHS / HSC Research Ethics Committees
  • National Offender Management Service (NOMS)

See https://www.myresearchproject.org.uk for accessing the IRAS system. (Remember to save information on the MORE system before going to another website.)

You can check if you need to use IRAS for NHS Research Ethics Committee (NHS REC) approval for your study as 'service evaluation' studies do not normally require IRAS NHS REC approval. This can be checked using the NRA decision tool that can be found at the following site:  http://www.hra-decisiontools.org.uk/ethics/ (Remember to save information on the MORE system before going to another website.)
